Why the Name Change?
|
| |
Why has East High School changed it name to East Community Learning Center? Has it
been converted to a charter school? Has it been taken over by a
multi-national corporation? Is it still even a high school?
The answers are NO, NO, and YES.
The system-wide rebuilding plan undertaken by the Akron
Public Schools required that it raise 41% of the funding needed for construction.
If this was achieved, the State of Ohio would supply the remaining 59%.
The School District and the City of Akron entered into an agreement whereby the Akron city
income tax rate, with voter approval, was increased by .25% (one-fourth of one per cent).
This additional revenue is the source of the matching funds needed by the Akron School District.
As part of the agreement between the School District and the City, each new school building
is to be available for community use after school hours and will be known as a community learning
center.
Part of East's conversion includes the addition of a middle school wing to house 7th and
8th graders who currently attend Goodyear Middle School. When all the new construction is complete,
East will become a grade 7 through grade 12 building and will encompass both middle school and high school.

AND SPEAKING OF NAME CHANGES....
If you are concerned about the possibility that the Akron Board of Education
might require East to change its decades-old nickname, the Orientals, let them know
how you feel.
Here
is how to get in touch with the Board.
